Do you have a drawer at home filled with old cell phones and MP3 players, some of which haven't worked in years? How about those tangles of chargers and cables that plug into who-knows-what anymore? And then there are those sad victims of of your computer upgrades, the hard drives, iMacs, monitors and printers collecting dust in the closet, or, more, likely, getting in the way in some corner of your room... wouldn't it be nice to get rid of all of that stuff? And wouldn't it be even nicer to get rid of it all in both a socially and ecologically responsible way?

Well, now's your chance, with Waterside's Recycling Day! On Saturday, June 5, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. the excellent non-profit organization PerScholas joins our community-wide effort to reduce, reuse and recycle with two stations on the Plaza. Bring your used, no-longer-needed electronics of all description--even radios!--whether in working order or not, and PerScholas will either find them a new job in a less fortunate household, or dispose of them in an EPA-approved manner. If you need assistance carrying your items to the PerScholas stations, there will be staff on hand to help you with that, too.

Of course, there's a reason why we're all wary of handing over our once-beloved computers and such: security. Not to worry. PerScholas does this exact sort of thing for dozens of big-name data-sensitive corporations and institutions, like the Federal Reserve Bank, NBC, JP Morgan Chase, the IRS, and Con Edison. PerScholas brings the items to a bonded, secure warehouse where all components are tracked every step of the way. They clear all--and they mean ALL--data from your hard drives using Department of Defense data security protocol. Then, whenever possible, PerScholas reconditions your electronics for subsidized sale to other non-profit organizations and individual, low-income homes. For older items, or those beyond help, PerScholas strips and responsibly disposes of all potentially harmful materials within each piece of equipment, and recycles the remainder. All of this isn't cheap for PerScholas, and they do suggest you give a donation of $10 to $50 when you bring your items.
Again, Waterside Plaza's Electronic Recycling will take place a week from Saturday, June 5, from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.. PerScholas employees will be on hand at both the entrance to the footbridge on the Plaza Level near Building 10, as well as at the street level entrance of Building 10.
