We love the theater, especially seeing new, sometimes even experimental, works, but high ticket prices (even for off-off-OFF-Broadway) prevents us from taking a chance on even a quarter of the performances that sound interesting.
Enter Waterside Plaza's very own Playformers, and their always entertaining--and, by the way, absolutely FREE--conclusion to their season, the Short Play Festival. Held this year on Monday, May 24, at 7:00, the Playformers Short Play Festival features readings and enactments of seven new works, all between five and twenty minutes long. It's an excellent way to experience a lot of vibrant new work in a convenient, convivial setting.

All of the pieces have potential, of course, but there are several that especially caught our eye, including Howard Ink!, by Lynda Crawford (above), in which a gay cartoon character fights for his life; Martin Bard's Gebirtig, about an actor's unsettling encounter with a holocaust survivor on a subway platform; Colleen Cosgrove's Love Thy..., about a domestic dispute played out on that the classic NYC stage, the front stoop; and The Bar Exam by Tevia Abrams (below), the story of a once-successful, now unemployed, young couple confronting their predatory landlord.
Playformers is a not-for-profit organization, founded in the late 1980s by then-Waterside resident Romola Robb Allrud, dedicated to encouraging and promoting new works for the stage. The group meets once a month in Waterside Plaza. The Short Play Festival will be held in the Community Room at 30 Waterside Plaza, Monday, May 24, starting at 7:00. Admission is free and the doors open at 6:30. Seating is limited, and reservations are strongly suggested. Please email playformers@earthlink.net to reserve your spots.
