Fun photo-op alert! Miranda July's Eleven Heavy Things in Union Square Park

We're been big Miranda July fans for years now (she does have her detractors, but they're just grumps), and have enjoyed just about everything this many-disciplined artist has done, from her sweet, edgy book of short stories No One Belongs Here More Than You; to her sweet, edgy movie Me and You and Everyone You Know; to her sweet, edgy web-based participatory art project, Learning To Love You More. Now July brings her sweet, edgy style to Union Square, turning the Park's main lawn into an interactive sculpture garden with Eleven Heavy Things.

Eleven Heavy Things is a scattering of an almost-dozen of July's playful fiberglass pieces, all designed to submit yourself and your loved ones to goofy photo opportunities. There are pedestals with typically-July pseudo-inspirational copy. There are several elaborately silly headdresses. There are monolith-type slabs with strategically placed holes and/or sayings. It's all very Miranda July, and we had a blast on Saturday giggling and taking pictures.

Eleven Heavy Things will be on display in Union Square Park from now until October 3, 2010. July has also recently completed her second feature film, called The Future, to be released, we hope, sometime this year. For an introduction to the artist/writer/filmmaker, her website promoting her book is a good place to start.
